Another Legislative Low

Just when it seems things can’t deteriorate any further in Washington, along comes an energy bill that eradicates any last shred of optimism. New Year’s Eve hasn’t yet arrived, yet that sound we hear are the champagne corks popping up and down K Street as oil, gas and big agriculture lobbyists celebrate their resounding success.

Chalk this piece of legislation up there with the “AMT relief” legislation that is heading our way - yet another tax cut ladled out without foresight or wisdom.

I confess to being optimistic that having the White House and Congress controlled by the different parties would result in useful compromises following the realization that nothing could be accomplished without the other’s support. What has instead developed is a bidding war as to who can appease the greatest number of donors as we head into 2008.

I could not agree more with your assessment of the energy bill. One of the biggest disappointments I had was with the Democratic reaction to the bill, labeling it as a great success. While it was a start and I understand with the current administration that compromise is needed, it did not touch the big ticket items (our base source of energy) that need to be addressed. Lets call it a first baby step on a very long hike where we need to be walking MUCH MUCH faster. Time is running out!
